Chronometer was produced from 1962 to 1966 and it was the Citizen's flagship model. It was develeped and launched against the first Grand Seiko released in 1960. As the name suggests, it was the first Citizen watch to comply with the Swiss Chronometer Inspection Standard of Excellence. While Seiko's Grand Seiko movement was derived from the "Crown," Citizen engineered a dedicated movement for this iconic model, representing the culmination of the brand's technological prowess.
The assembly of the Chronometer followed an unconventional process; historical records indicate that each piece was meticulously crafted by a single artisan. This method was an anomaly in the watchmaking industry, where production often operates as a mass-scale industrial process. This distinctive approach contributed to the uniqueness of the "Chronometer," making it an exceptionally special model in Citizen's lineup.
Citizen manual-wind caliber 0400 was crafted explicitly for this model. Renowned for its powerful mainspring, this movement boasted an impressive 53-hour power reserve. Among Japanese vintage watches, it has gained a well-deserved reputation for its exceptional performance.
It's hard to overlook the beauty of the Citizen Chronometer, considered one of the most exquisite vintage Citizen watches ever crafted.
The case is large at 37 mm and the multi-faceted, thick-cut lugs are one of the watch's distinctive features. The Citizen C mark can be seen on the crown. The caseback of the watch has a gold medallion with an eagle symbol. This was the first Citizen product to feature an eagle, and the eagle symbol is still used on flagship models today. The dial is a silver dial with sunburst finish. The dauphine hands finish the whole look gracefully.
