The Bund, a pilot's chronograph used primarily by the German Air Force in the 60s and 70s (though others also adopted it), was a standout tool watch of its time. Powered by the manual-wound Valjoux 22 and Valjoux 230 calibers, the watch featured flyback mechanisms and a bold, clear design with large lumed numerals and an especially attractive bezel layout. With a 43mm diameter and 13mm thickness, it was quite large for its era, yet still in line with the tradition of pilot watches.
In the 1980s, Helmut Sinn (Sinn founder), acquired old stock of the Heuer Bund watches, reconditioned them, added Sinn branding, and reintroduced them as the Sinn 155 Bw. Later in the decade, Helmut aimed to create a new generation of military-issued pilot's chronographs, leading to the development of the Sinn 156. He combined the case and general dial design of the 155/Bund with the relatively new automatic chronograph movements from Lemania. As a result, the 156 is considered the direct successor to the Bund, following the 155.
Militaries have strict requirements for their equipment. The Lemania 5100 met all criteria. To enhance the movement's durability, Lemania added supports on either side, significantly increasing its shock resistance. Notably, the 5100 is one of the few chronograph movements where shock has minimal effect on the chronograph second hand's operation. Most chronograph mechanisms use an intermediary wheel to drive the second hand, which is vulnerable to stopping under shock. The 5100, however, employed a direct drive system, making it nearly immune to shock-induced stoppage, except in extreme cases. For many years, the German military considered the 5100 the only movement suitable for its needs, largely due to its exceptional shock resistance.
A military pilot's chronograph is characterized by its robustness, accuracy, and practicality, designed to meet the unique requirements of aviators. Offering precise timekeeping, multiple timing features, superior legibility, and durable construction, these watches are built to endure the challenges of the cockpit while serving as vital tools for navigation and flight control. Whether worn by professional pilots or aviation aficionados, military pilot chronographs combine a rich military legacy with advanced horological engineering.
